Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

In light of concerns clergy and others have raised recently, I want to share the below message that Presiding Bishop Curry shared with the House of Bishops today.

Please know that you are continually in my prayers.

Bishop of Long Island

January 16, 2021

My Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

In the days to come, people across this nation will gather to worship God, observe the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and watch the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. In light of public health and security concerns, we must proceed prudently and carefully.

Although discussion is circulating online of threats of violence to places of worship that may occur over the next few days, we are not aware at this time of any threats to Episcopal churches. We encourage you to stay apprised of information from law enforcement in your area.

As you consider your own local and regional responses, please be assured of my prayers for you and your dioceses, as well as my confidence in your continued faithful and wise leadership.

Almighty God, We humbly beseech thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of thy favor and glad to do thy will. Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in thy Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to thy law, we may show forth thy praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in thee to fail; all which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

— “A Prayer for Our Country”, Book of Common Prayer, p. 820

God bless you and keep the faith,

The Most Rev. Michael B. Curry
Presiding Bishop and Primate
The Episcopal Church

PRAYERS:

Save your people, Lord, and bless your inheritance;
Govern and uphold us now and always.

Day by day we bless you;
We praise your name forever.

Lord, keep us from sin today;
Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy.

Lord, show us your love and mercy;
For we put our trust in you.

In you, Lord, is our hope;
And we shall never hope in vain.
  • Morning Prayer II, Book of Common Prayer, p. 98

Eternal God, in whose perfect kingdom no sword is drawn but the sword of righteousness, no strength known but the strength of love: So mightily spread abroad your Spirit, that all peoples may be gathered together under the banner of the Prince of Peace, as children of one God and Creator of us all; to whom be dominion and glory, now and forever.
  • For Peace, Book of Common Prayer, p. 815

Oh God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your son. Look now with compassion on the entire human family; and particularly this part of the family, in the United States, and those in our nation’s capital; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
  • For the Human Family, Book of Common Prayer, p. 815

Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power and the glory,
forever and ever.
Amen.
